Guernsey Animal Aid Sanctuary was founded by Sue Vidamour in 1996. Sue moved the sanctuary to bigger, 16 acre, premises in 2001 to accommodate the growing number of animals coming into the centre. Sue has been re-homing dogs for 18 years and was once a Welfare Officer for Redwings (the horse sanctuary).

Located in a lovely rural area, the centre has deer (the only ones in the Channel Islands), guinea pigs, pot-bellied pigs, dogs, cats, horses, goats, donkeys, tortoises, birds, ferrets and chipmunks. The centre also takes in injured animals nursing them back to full health before releasing them back into the wild.

Keeping warm for the winterThe centre tries to re-home most of its animals however, some of the centre’s animals are permanent residents and have become firm favourites with the staff. These residents include:- two donkeys named Blackberry and Bramble, two miniature Shetland ponies (Huckleberry and Finnegan), three pot-bellied pigs (Lizzie, Jack and Dougal) and Merlin, a New Forest pony.

Future plans for the sanctuary include opening a visitor’s centre which will teach children how to look after their pets. Sue hopes to turn a wooded area and a valley into a conservation area. Already under construction are a new dog run and two new stables.

Your duties

Some of the duties you could be involved with:

  • Rescuing animals. (Just recently the centre was called out to help round up two goats that were causing chaos on a main road and to capture two pigs that were in high spirits in a graveyard).
  • Taking sick animals to the vet together with a member of staff.
  • Cleaning out pens and cages, preparing food for the animals and feeding them.

You would work for approximately eight hours per day.

Accomodation

The SanctuaryThe main building on the site is the home of Sue and her family, your room will be within this lovely 100 year-old Guernsey farmhouse which has an abundance of beams and loads of charm. The location is not too far from the airport.

Getting around Guernsey is very easy. You could purchase a bus card which will allow you to travel anywhere on the island for 30p per trip. The buses are regular (but stop running in the early evening). There are many attractions to see in Guernsey and the capital, St Peter Port, has a good selection of shops as well as an abundance of restaurants for you to try.
