PILS Volunteer in outreach programs.

This programme, located in Port-Louis in Mauritius, needs volunteers. You could choose to help with simple or complex office tasks, visit patients with a qualified social worker or help with preventative activities. Help conduct information sessions for schools, youth groups or the private sector. Whatever your choice, it will be a worthwhile one.

Although educated Mauritians do understand and speak English, most patients do not. Most preventive sessions are carried out in French or Creole. Therefore, basic French would be an advantage to you on this project. Minimum age for this programme is 21.

A volunteer's perspective

A brief description of one volunteer's time in Mauritius:

"The project occupied my time with proposal writing to foreign donors, which is something I am engaged with in my career on a daily basis.  I also reorganized and cleaned up the library and resource centre. I came into the project center for three days every week, for a total of six weeks.  This worked well with my schedule and needs.  The staff were extremely flexible, helpful and open.  It was a pleasure to work in such a positive environment and I think we both benefited."  Amanda, Canada.

The threat

Due to the seriousness of the AIDS pandemic, HIV/AIDS is increasingly being addressed by organisations like the United Nations. Perhaps the most ambitious goal, however, was set at the 2005 United Nations World Summit. There, countries pledged to give HIV/AIDS victims universal access to treatment and prevention programs by 2010. In the long run, prevention is the best way to combat AIDS. In developing countries, many people do not know how HIV/AIDS is spread. More than a third of all those infected with AIDS are under the age of 25 and by educating schools and communities about the dangers of HIV/AIDS, infection rates can be greatly reduced.

It takes time, effort and the help of those willing to work to bring an end to this global threat. Can you offer the support, the love and understanding to those who have unfortunately contracted HIV/AIDS?
