Cusco rooftops

  • Teacher's assistant: Volunteers for this placement must be highly-motivated, self starters, who are able to work independently. You must have patience and a willingness to help in all areas of daycare. Some of these schools are on the outskirts of Cusco, so there may be some travel time invloved. Minimum duration: four weeks. Spanish level: High to intermediate. Number of volunteers: two.
    Street sceneStreet kids: Like many cities Cusco has it's fare share of abandoned children and this projects tries to help by offering the kids morning courses in woodcarving, tailoring and shoe mending followed by a structured education in the afternoon. You must have a specific interest in children, have a great deal of patience, be organised and have some skill or some teaching experience. Minimum duration: four weeks. Spanish level: Beginner. Number of volunteers: four. 
  • The World Famous Machu Picchu Special needs school: In this placement, volunteers can work in the clinic feeding, bathing and playing with the children. You could be a teachers assistant or help the children with their work. Volunteers must be self-motivated. The clinic is severely understaffed and the nurses may not have the time to assign you duties so you must take the initiative and ask. Minimum duration: four weeks. Spanish level: High to beginner. Number of volunteers: six.
  • Care home: This home is run by a Catholic order of nuns. The work here is various, work related to the care of the eldery include, helping with lunchtime feeding, A Peruvian little boy.bathing, hairdressing, even the cutting of fingernails. Recreation is a big part of the job: you could be playing ball with them or drawing, playing bingo, dancing or singing. They love foreigners around here and start smiling as soon as you walk into the room. Anyone with a medical background would be very welcome. Minimum duration: four weeks. Spanish level: High to intermediate. Number of volunteers: two.

You could also work in travel, a youth centre or an orphanage.
