The village experience

Living without ‘luxuries’ as we know them can be hard for us but, for this village it is the normal way of life.

This village is a three hour drive from Umtata, the last hour of which is only accessible by offroad vehicles.  The village is fairly spread out and, to get about, you could easily walk between 5 and 10 kms a day or more.  There is no electricity, no running water, no flush toilets, and only a ‘spaza’ shop (which is very limited).Traditionally Xhosa people have rarely had to stick to a rigid schedule, things being determined by necessity and the flow of moment to moment activity.  One should not expect western-style punctuality, and thus patience is needed.  Everything takes time in village life, and things take place as and when they happen.  Tea or mealtimes are unlikely to be at exactly the same time everyday.  If one can relax into this concept, it becomes quite a pleasure.  This experience could be ideal of a group. Prices start from £850 ad include 6 days in cape Town then 10 days in the village of Ubuntu Bridge.

Hobbiton-on-Hogsback_____________________________________________________________

Hobbiton-on-Hogsback, activity centre for the disabled Hogsback is a village in the Amathole Mountains. Hogsback possesses a spectacular setting, and overlooks some of the highest points in the range including Gaikas Kop and the Hogsback peaks.

Hobbiton was started in 1947 as an Outdoor Education Centre for disadvantaged children, especially orphans created by the 2nd World War. Since then our focus has remained faithful to disadvantaged children although due to financial constraints we now also offer education and development to children and adults from paying sectors of the community.

We provide the selected children with an insight into a different lifestyle, removed from the squalor of the townships, the violence and degradation of their normal background. At Hobbiton they are exposed to the beauty of the Hogsback mountains, forests and waterfalls whilst participating in all that we have to offer.

The children are taught life skills such as social interaction in the form of Team Building, as well as personal development skills that might enable them to become leaders. As a core philosophy, all activities offered at Hobbiton must be voluntary and fun!

The activities offered include White Water Rafting, Paint Ball based activities, Abseiling Madonna & Child Waterfall (35 m), Jacobs Ladder (10 m), Trapeze (7 m) and our internationally acclaimed Group Dynamics and High Ropes Courses. Although we specialize in Team Building and Leadership courses, we also help facilitate Goal Setting and Strategic Planning and Courses and can organize a motivational speaker.

At Hobbiton instructors will be taught abseiling, climbing skills, bush lore and maybe also white water rafting.  We encourage instructors to participate in every activity, but they are not forced to do so if they do not enjoy an aspect of our work.

The work is mostly outdoors and with children, but includes training and routine maintenance.  You do not need to be very fit or need any specialist training.
