Mauritius
Help for a paradise island. Mauritius lies 21 degrees south of the equator, just above the Tropic of Capricorn, in the Indian Ocean to the east of continental Africa and the island of Madagascar. Mauritius is made up of low-lying coastal plains which rise up to mountains encircling a central plateau. Around half of the land area is devoted to farming with sugar and tobacco being the most popular crops. The island is volcanic in origin and almost completely surrounded by coral reefs with a number of offshore archipelagos nearby.

Almost the single greatest threat to poverty reduction and human development today is the spread of HIV/AIDS pandemic. About five million people are infected with the disease every year and more than three million people die. Since HIV/AIDS first started spreading, around 30 million people have died from the virus, creating millions of ‘AIDS orphans’ who have lost their parents to the disease. 40 million people worldwide currently live with this dreadful virus. |
